Take out appropriate full travel insurance before travelling and make sure it covers you for all the activities you want to do and that it is valid for the entire trip. Check that it includes cover for any activities you want to do including any extreme sports.

With the winter ski season about to get into full swing, please make sure you are fully prepared. Along with using the correct clothing and safety equipment, make sure you are clear about your limits on and off the slopes. Alcohol can affect your awareness of the cold and impair your judgement and reaction time.

Check your passport is valid, fill out the emergency details, look after it while travelling and keep it in a safe place. Make sure you check your passports well ahead of your departure date. You do not want to find your passport has expired the night before you travel. Ensure everyone in your party has a valid passport. Make sureyou have all necessary visas.

Some countries insist your passport must be valid for 6 months after the date you travel so check to see if this applies to you. Be aware of the entry requirements of the countries you are visiting and apply for visas in good time. Make copies of important travel documents, take a picture or make copies and store them securely using a secure data storage site.

Expect the unexpected when travelling and always take enough money with you or have access to some emergency funds in case of an unexpected incident. Check your credit cards are valid for the length of your trip.

Tips when you are at your destination

Laws and customs can be very different from in the UK, so please know and respect them as the penalties can be very severe

Don’t take risks, trust your instincts and think about what you are doing

Take a copy of contact details for the British Embassy or Consulate in case you need to contact them

Buy bottled water especially if you have any doubt whether the water is safe to drink

Reapply your sun cream frequently especially after swimming and make sure it’s the correct factor for your skin type
